Nottingham Women's A Cappella Summer Chorus

The Lace City Chorus invites members of the community to join us for six weeks. We will learn six songs and then perform these at a public event. It's a great opportunity to sing for a short period if you can’t commit to a full time chorus, or to come along and see what the Lace City Chorus is all about.

I've never sung in a choir before, can I join?

You don't need to have any particular singing experience; you just need to be able to carry a tune. If you're really new to singing, we will ensure you stand close to someone else who is singing your part. Hearing another singer really helps.

Can I bring a friend?

Yes! In fact we'd love you to. Bring lots of friends...the more the merrier. Your friend will need to register too, but you can register more than one person at a time.

If you don't bring a friend, don't worry - you'll probably make some new ones.

Do I have to be able to read music?

No! In addition to sheet music, every participant can either download learning tracks from our website or receive a learning CD. The learning tracks will help you learn even if you have no singing experience. We encourage all participants to listen to the learning tracks even if they are really good sight readers.

Is there an age limit?

All ages are welcome, as long as they are able to participate fully. Young members should be old enough to maintain concentration for the full 90 minute rehearsal. Members under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult, who remains with them during the rehearsals and performance. We usually stand for most of the rehearsal, but participants for whom this will be difficult are welcome to use a chair if required.

What if I can't come to every rehearsal?

We encourage all our singers to attend every rehearsal, however we recognise that you may have a prior commitment, and can't make it every week. If you miss a week, you should contact summerchorus@lacecity.net and find out what you missed so that you can listen to those songs on your learning CD. There is no refund or reduction of fees if you are unable to attend.

What if I can't make the final performance?

You're still welcome to come along and participate. Although we work towards the final performance, a lot of the satisfaction comes from the experience of singing in a large group at rehearsal.

Can I use my sheet music at the performance?

Usually Lace City Chorus performs without sheet music. However, because we are learning so many songs in such a short period, you are welcome to use your sheet music during the performance.

What does 'a cappella' mean?

A cappella means 'unaccompanied'. We sing in four part harmony without any instruments playing. We use a 'pitchpipe' to play a note so that we all know where to start, and then we're on our own!

Is there a costume?

Yes! What you are asked to wear will depend on the performance venue, but it will typically involve black shoes, black trousers or long black skirt and a top in one of a selection of colours to give the chorus a unit look. You should not need to go out and buy anything new for the performance. We also encourage you to use makeup for the performance. If you're not experienced with makeup, just a little bit of lipstick will do, and there are plenty of willing volunteers to help out.

I've done a Lace City singing course before, can I come again?

Yes! We would be delighted to see you again. Your experience on the singing course will mean you have a head start on learning the Summer Chorus songs!

What songs will we sing?

We're still finalising the repertoire list. However, we usually sing a mix of vintage and more modern songs, arranged in the barbershop style. Something for everyone!

Can I join the Lace City Chorus when Summer Chorus is finished?

We know that many people just want a short term singing experience, and that is fine. We are not in the business of making anyone feel pressured to join us. However, we're aware that there are always people who find they love our style of singing and want to do more. We'll have a short information session after one of our rehearsals; anyone who wants to know more is welcome to stay behind, listen and ask questions. We'll also have a flyer available with some information about joining the chorus. We encourage anyone who is interested to come back and try out. If you don't want to, that's OK too. There is no hard sell!
